LA TORTUGA
La Tortuga
While you are our guest in Los Jardines de la Reina, accommodations are provided primarily on two large live-aboard boats. Our Original craft is La Tortuga - a large, 110 foot long, double decker floating hotel with seven cabins for guests.
The newly constructed Tortuga is an unbelievably solid boat, made of steel and then anchored in a protected channel, so that it never moves about. The threat of getting seasick is non-existent. This boat doesn't move one inch. Each cabin has its own shower with hot water, toilet and individually adjustable high tech air-conditioning system. A large air conditioned dining room downstairs with both a foredeck and afterdeck make this a very comfortable home away from home. The Tortuga normally accommodates 14 anglers, two per room.
Accommodation,
Tortuga, Halcon and Explorador boats are staffed by Cubans but run by Italians, who are wonderful hosts and managers of the Cuba operation. They will do their best to tend to your every need. All the boats in the Avalon operation are in constant radio contact with one another as well as the mainland in Jucaro. The Tortuga has a state of the art satellite telephone system, providing immediate communication with the outside world. Generators on both boats run twenty four hours providing electricity for plenty of 110 and 220 V. outlets.
The dining on both boats combines the flair of the best Continental Italian cuisine with traditional Cuban favourites like rice and beans, and fried bananas. The black bean soup is to kill for! Beverages available on board include bottled water, Mineral and Tonic water, various soft drinks (Coca Cola etc.), beer, rum and excellent wines.
There are plenty of rod racks and facilities for cleaning tackle at the end of the day. Laundry is also available on a daily basis. For a trip to Cuba it is better to travel light and you can leave all your formal clothes at home. Be sure to pack all your clothing and gear in soft luggage rather than any hard sided suitcases. Make sure that your name and address are clearly printed on all luggage and your rod cases.
Daily routine
Fishing hours are totally at the discretion of the clients, unlike many other lodges. Our fishing day normally begins with breakfast at 7:00am, and departing for fishing from 7: 45am on. Many people elect to return to the boat for a nice lunch. Most of the flats are within fifteen minutes of the boat, and it is always nice to take a lunch break in the shade and relax a bit before fishing a long afternoon. Others that are going farther or would like to spend the day on the flats can do this by requesting a box lunch the night before. Clients can fish late into the afternoon if they like, leaving time for the boat ride back so that we get you back to the boat before sunset. In the Jardines, the morning winds often calm down in the afternoons and the fishing in the late afternoon can be superb, especially for bonefish.
Our fishing weeks on board the boats run from a Friday to the following Saturday. Our season is from mid October to end of August . A normal week includes five full days of fishing and one to two half days depending on your schedule and mode of transportation.
