21.12.2006 : The Salmonswitch

The final group had just left the Lodge and outside my cozy camp-office a bunch of demo-rods were hanging-out in the rod-rack. Still shiny and crispy as when they were tackled up in the spring, but no longer virgins. Their cork handles molded from shaking hands with many guests and silver scales scattered and etched to their blanks, bearing witness of battles and victories. In less than 5 month these rods and reels had gained more combat-experience than most of their clones ever will. Steffen@lax.is

This week belong to one of the top week in Ponoi and contribute each year to Ponoi´s reputation as the most productive Salmon River in the world.

In 2006 this week gave Henrik Nilsen – Denmark 72 salmon during his 6 days fishing – Here is what Henrik wrote to us after his return from Ponoi this season – “Acha camp Ponoi turned out to be my dream vacation - The fishing was fantastic, in 6 days I landed no less than 72 beautiful Atlantic salmon with an average of 12 to 14 pounds. More than 50% was fresh fish from the sea. All the fish was very aggressive on the fly, and dry flies were deadly when the river was clear. steffen@lax-a.is

1.12.2006 : Acha camp - week report - week 25. 17 June – 24 June

A solid and well-built High pressure was hanging over the Northern Scandinavian Peninsula with day temperatures well above 25C° - beside these not very cheerful facts, the Sun was unmerciful “ON” for twenty four hours – anywhere else in the world these condition would make an Salmon anglers life really miserable and poor – but as always not in Ponoi I’m tempted to say! 2.11.2006 : The Rubber leg

One of the most charming parts in Salmon fishing must be the flies and the never ending discussions how to fish them the right way – probably salmon fishing is the most traditional game in Fly-fishing – and nothing really have change during the last many generations. Of cause most of the fly tackle has change – Carbon rods and clothing in all sorts of high tech material have make our life easier. The way we fish and “design” our dear flies, is fundamentally the same as way back – nothing has change. Steffen , steffen@lax-a.is

31.10.2006 : The right Salmon “ammunition” for Russian Salmon

Beyond question one of the most popular flies for “Kola Salmon” has to be the indisputable productive Red But. On a double hook in Size 2 – 12 to long wing Tub fly = 1” to 1 ˝” Red But is one of the reliable flies you can fasten to you leader tip

There are many versions “cooked” over the topic and precisely how a Red but should look like is not worth to portray in this forum - However I will bring the pattern I have used for many years.

30.10.2006 : Hairy Butt

Hairy Butt is one of my Kola favorite and it was born during the first years we where fishing in this Salmon heaven. The fly is a conglomeration of proven attractors found in some of the most well-known salmon flies. The Hairy Mary and Red Butt are the main role-models, and an extra layer of yellow is thrown into the wing for god measure. Hairy Butt is very often the guide’s first choice and it will normally work under the most extreme conditions. It has the ability to trigger of the fresh fish and at the same time the power to make some of the ‘gray backs’ do foolish things. If it makes any sense to talk about "Big fish - flies", Hairy Butt is definitely one of them. It works both in fast and slow water and you can fish it dead still with a big swing and no twitching of the rod, only retrieving steadily in the slowest pools.

Remember to throw some Hairy Butt into you fly box no matter what Salmon river you are going to hammer on Kola. Steffen steffen@lax-a.is

A solemn quietness was hanging in the air around the Umba river. Estancia Tecka certainly has to rate right at the top of of Argentinean Patagonia's great lodges. I fished Tecka in January of 2006 and was enthralled by the diverse wildlife, majestic scenery and absolutely top notch trout fishing. We caught lots of trout and lots of very big trout too. Lax-a is now offering fishing on one of the most sought after Steelhead rivers in the world. This legendary fishery has probably been photographed for its sheer beauty more than any water in North America. And, beauty not withstanding, it also holds more than its fair share of hard charging Steelies. Fish on average are between 6-9 pounds. Some can top 15 pounds. Certain times of year… July, Sept., and early Oct., these fish can be taken on dry flies being skated. Fishing on the Umpqua will be wading in the designated "Fly Fishing Only" section of the North Umpqua River and float trips below that section of the North Umpqua and the main section of the Umpqua River which will still require some wading. 8.3.2010 : Fishing in Cuba - Casa Batida Santa Maria

This is high-octane! Precise fast casting is the medicine. Fish from 10 to 80 lbs are present all year long and very big migrating tarpons up to 160 lbs start to show up in great numbers from March onwards. Classic sight flats flyfishing combined with chances in mangroves and channels when weather or tide is wrong for flats. Always a chance. Fishing for big snappers and jack is also great..Axelo axelo@lax-a.is
