The Salmonswitch
The final group had just left the Lodge and outside my cozy camp-office a bunch of demo-rods were hanging-out in the rod-rack. Still shiny and crispy as when they were tackled up in the spring, but no longer virgins. Their cork handles molded from shaking hands with many guests and silver scales scattered and etched to their blanks, bearing witness of battles and victories. In less than 5 month these rods and reels had gained more combat-experience than most of their clones ever will. Steffen@lax.is
Now just 4 available rods – Acha river tributary 2/6 – 9/6 !
6 rods just appear in our outstanding Acha camp - Date 14/7 – 21/7.
This week belong to one of the top week in Ponoi and contribute each year to Ponoi´s reputation as the most productive Salmon River in the world.
In 2006 this week gave Henrik Nilsen – Denmark 72 salmon during his 6 days fishing – Here is what Henrik wrote to us after his return from Ponoi this season – “Acha camp Ponoi turned out to be my dream vacation - The fishing was fantastic, in 6 days I landed no less than 72 beautiful Atlantic salmon with an average of 12 to 14 pounds. More than 50% was fresh fish from the sea. All the fish was very aggressive on the fly, and dry flies were deadly when the river was clear. steffen@lax-a.is
5 open rods have just appeared in Pacha camp - Ponoi river
The program is especially interesting for those who value accommodation highly as it is revolving around a luxurious timber camp with a communal building for eating and socializing. Accommodation is in comfortable cabins with twin beds and heated by stoves – everything very cosy. Steffen@lax-a
Last available Spring / Summer rods in Ponoi 2007
Lax-á are launching a dazzling new Ponoi program for 2007 – “Acha / Pacha 80 Km program” - in July and the beginning of August when you will have the opportunity to fish 3 days in each of these Classic Salmon Camps – a total of 80 Kilometres of prime Salmon water. The Acha camp stretch contains a large number of classic pools and also has access to the Acha river (second largest tributary on the Ponoi river system) – for those of you would like to skim a Bomber or to hitch a small tube over thousands of salmon – Ponoi is the place.
Acha camp - week report - week 25. 17 June – 24 June
A solid and well-built High pressure was hanging over the Northern Scandinavian Peninsula with day temperatures well above 25C° - beside these not very cheerful facts, the Sun was unmerciful “ON” for twenty four hours – anywhere else in the world these condition would make an Salmon anglers life really miserable and poor – but as always not in Ponoi I’m tempted to say! Week 28, at Acha camp Ponoi turned out to be my dream vacation. The fishing was just fantastic. In 6 days I landed no less than 72 beautiful Atlantic salmon with an average of 12 to 14 pounds. More than 50% was fresh fish from the sea.
The Rubber leg
One of the most charming parts in Salmon fishing must be the flies and the never ending discussions how to fish them the right way – probably salmon fishing is the most traditional game in Fly-fishing – and nothing really have change during the last many generations. Of cause most of the fly tackle has change – Carbon rods and clothing in all sorts of high tech material have make our life easier. The way we fish and “design” our dear flies, is fundamentally the same as way back – nothing has change. Steffen , steffen@lax-a.is
The right Salmon “ammunition” for Russian Salmon
Beyond question one of the most popular flies for “Kola Salmon” has to be the indisputable productive Red But. On a double hook in Size 2 – 12 to long wing Tub fly = 1” to 1 ˝” Red But is one of the reliable flies you can fasten to you leader tip
There are many versions “cooked” over the topic and precisely how a Red but should look like is not worth to portray in this forum - However I will bring the pattern I have used for many years.
Hereby how Red But should be according my experience. CLICK READ MORE FOR ARTICLE , Steffen , steffen@lax-a.is
Hairy Butt
Hairy Butt is one of my Kola favorite and it was born during the first years we where fishing in this Salmon heaven. The fly is a conglomeration of proven attractors found in some of the most well-known salmon flies. The Hairy Mary and Red Butt are the main role-models, and an extra layer of yellow is thrown into the wing for god measure. Hairy Butt is very often the guide’s first choice and it will normally work under the most extreme conditions. It has the ability to trigger of the fresh fish and at the same time the power to make some of the ‘gray backs’ do foolish things. If it makes any sense to talk about "Big fish - flies", Hairy Butt is definitely one of them. It works both in fast and slow water and you can fish it dead still with a big swing and no twitching of the rod, only retrieving steadily in the slowest pools.
Remember to throw some Hairy Butt into you fly box no matter what Salmon river you are going to hammer on Kola. Steffen steffen@lax-a.is

Steffen´s diary
A solemn quietness was hanging in the air around the Umba river. Now and then a distance cry from a raven penetrated the sky or a breath of wind would rattle the colourful leaves of birches and aspen. Each time a handful of leaves would drop off and soon - very soon - the winter would march in and wrap the infinite Russian taiga in its white dress. FLY-FISH PATAGONIA...900 SQUARE MILES OF PRIVATE RAINBOW, BROWN TROUT AND BROOK TROUT WATER
Estancia Tecka certainly has to rate right at the top of of Argentinean Patagonia's great lodges. I fished Tecka in January of 2006 and was enthralled by the diverse wildlife, majestic scenery and absolutely top notch trout fishing. We caught lots of trout and lots of very big trout too. Huge brookies in tiny lagunas devoured mice patterns skittered along the surface, Wary browns could also be coaxed from small spring creek hiding holes, and monster Rainbows abound in the beautiful Corcavado River which runs through the ranch. Kanektok River, Alaska West
Alaska West operates a fixed base tent lodge located on the Kanektok River in the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge in far western Alaska along the coast of the Bering Sea. The Kanektok is one of Alaska’s most fishable rivers and early June through early July is King Season. Fly fishing for King salmon is not for the traditionalist fly angler with a clicker drag and a cane rod. These fish will kick your butt and alter the standard you will judge all other fish by. UMPQUA RIVER
Lax-a is now offering fishing on one of the most sought after Steelhead rivers in the world. This legendary fishery has probably been photographed for its sheer beauty more than any water in North America. And, beauty not withstanding, it also holds more than its fair share of hard charging Steelies. Fish on average are between 6-9 pounds. Some can top 15 pounds. Certain times of year… July, Sept., and early Oct., these fish can be taken on dry flies being skated. Fishing on the Umpqua will be wading in the designated "Fly Fishing Only" section of the North Umpqua River and float trips below that section of the North Umpqua and the main section of the Umpqua River which will still require some wading. Great fishing trip in Kola - from Christian Moutier
Our fishing trip in July on the Kola river was great. The 5 of us were delighted and, although I have already fished the Kola last year, I have beaten my own records with 41 fish landed, one 11kg, two 9kg, and quite a few 5 to 8kg.
Thanks!
Arni,
Many thanks for your help with organising my 30th birthday trip. My girlfriend and I had a wonderful time. On my birthday I took 3 salmon from East Ranga beat 1 and my girlfriend had her first ever salmon from West Ranga beat 4 in the evening. We continued to land a total of 8 salmon and 1 sea trout of 7 pounds over the 2.5 days. It was a perfect weekend!
Thanks again,
Lawrence

Varzuga Fishing Report from Roxtons
We are now halfway through our final week at Lower Varzuga and into the penultimate week of the season and whilst the weather remains very unpredictable the fishing has been excellent. The weather has been veering from still with bright sunshine to brief but very heavy showers which is no bad thing for the river but with an occasionally strong upstream wind it has made fishing quite hard at times
Monday on the Kola
16 salmon were landed on the Kola today, Julian Pulland from the Uk landed a monster a 35 pounder and thats the second biggest salmon this year.
