Eruption with Vala's eyes
Vala from our office went to see the eruption for herself this week and here is the report of her experince. Lax-į will offer day tours to the eruption site this summer and it is ideal for anglers to add one day to experience the volcanic power here in Iceland. It is not unlikely that the eruption will still be going on this summer but specialists say that it might last for weeks or even years.
I took a trip with www.icelandontrack.is yesterday to see the eruption by Eyjafjallalokull in Iceland.
In order to get there we had to cross the glacier, Solheimajokull, which in itself was exciting enough!
Weather was ok when we left Reykjavik at 14:00, rather windy though. On our way east the wind slowed down and by the time we reached the glacier it had calmed considerably, the sky was clear and visibility great.
We reached the eruption area around 5:30pm and what a sight! It felt unreal to be there and witness this magnificent magnitude of power bursting into the air. The sound was also very special, quite loud actually.
In just over a week a whole new landscape has evolved with a new mountain right in it!

We drove down to where the lava field ended and you could see the glow from fire everywhere within....some even tried frying a hot dog and it worked wonderfully ;-)
|
From the eruption itself a lava stream has evolved and ends up falling from a cliff forming a beautful fall of firy melting lava. Here we are, me with my daugter Valgerdur and son in law Bjossi. |
Me and and my brother Oli, the manager and owner of Iceland on Track
There were helicopters flying around and quite a lot of people viewing this eruption which is not a big one but truly amazing and has really turned out to be a tourist eruption.

Later in the evening the eruption became greater and it was absolutely fantastic to see the contrasts of ice, sand and fire towards the darkening sky, one could not but admire the power in the life of the earth when it throws huge rocks on fire, into the air where they break into a million pieces, plum down and join the stream towards the inland. It felt somewhat like a constant show of fireworks

Witnessing something like this is quite unique and one realises that proabably it will be only once in a lifetime so if you have a chance to see this I do recommend it. Vala
