Villa Maria fishing report - 90 fish landed
This week we have welcomed a mix of different people from USA, Germany and Switzerland. As I was saying in the previous report (1st week of January), the high water condition due to the heavy rain we had last week, brought a lot of fresh fish in the river, probably waiting in the estuary to come up.
The water level dropped slowly and it cleared up as well from last week. The water temperature has been pretty cool, from 10 to 13°C in average, which is perfect to have good activities in the pools. The weather has been changing a lot during the week, sometime sunny, sometime rainy but the wind has been pretty slow, so the water level remained very good, and stayed coloured but clear enough to have a great week of fishing.
We landed 90 fish, with an average of 2,77 fish per day, better than last year for the same week, with an average weight of 11 pounds.
The fishing has been very good throughout the week, and some day some pools were literally “on fire”, in some of them we caught 7 fish one time and 10 fish another time in one only session!!
The fish were showing quite a lot, and most of the pool held a good number of fish. We saw also some of them running upstream, using the high water to go further up to reach the upper spawning ground. All the fish caught were very fresh, giving to our guest strong fight, good jump and long run. The takes tough, were usually good but sometime tricky, and we had to present the fly deep, close to the fish using S3-S4 shooting head, or Skagit line with type 8 or T14.
The fly of the week is without any doubt the Pepe’s chartreuse leech, which works very well in this coloured water. We had sometime a Snaelda in front of it (so two flies together), or in front of another colour of leech to put the fly down and reach the bottom or deep channel, has the coloured water didn’t allowed the fish to see the fly from far.
On Tuesday 18th of January, Kevin K. caught the fish of the week, and also of the season at Villa Maria for the moment. A fish of a lifetime.
He was fishing with his guide standing close to him, telling him what to do and how to present the fly. As this part of the pool has been very good the previous days, both of them were expecting a take on every cast. Kevin followed the instruction of the guide, and he put the chartreuse leech nicely on the “hot spot” and after a couple of good cast and nice presentation, Kevin felt a very strong stop! Nothing moved?both of them waiting to see what was going on! But then, they saw the line starting to move and once Kevin put more pressure on the line, the fish started to run and took him out about 20 meters of backing in 5 s!
After a long and strong fight they landed a beautiful 24 pounder male sea trout!! What a fish!!
During this week, Kevin and other client have caught some very nice sea trout, very fresh just entered in the river a couple of hours, or days ago. We landed 6 fish above 20 pounds, and 20 fish above 15 pounds!
No doubt, our clients had great fishing, lot of fun with the guide and staff and very fine cuisine. They will certainly come back again and again!
