Ptarmigan season is now
Ptarmigan season is short this year but it is only allowed to shoot Thursday to Sunday in November. The reason for the short season is that there has been a big decrease in the stock.
The government has been setting laws to protect the ptarmigan. One year the ptarmigan was preserved entirely, it is prohibited to sell the birds and now the season has been shortened. Ptramigan is the Christmas dinner for a big part of the Icelandic nation so many must change their Christmas tradition. The last few years we have been importing ptarmigan from Scotland.
The reason for the decrease in the stock is beeing reserched.
But there are many ideas of what might be the case.
There is an increase of mink and fox in Iceland.
The lack of snow for the last few years makes the ptarmigan more voulnarable for predidors.
Lots of constructions in the country have taken up part of the heath where the ptarmigan lives
Then there are others that say that the decrese are regular downs of the stock and it will come up again.
What ever the reason is we incourage hunters to be moderate
