Steffen Juhl 2006 fishing news from our Russian rivers .
Dear Friends!
Lax-į“s first Kola season is near to end and all superlatives are queued up to illustrate season 2006.
Ponoi
Our Acha camp produced almost 2500 Salmon to 70 rods and three weeks in a row we averaged 43 Salmon per rod – the last week in June the average went up to 46 Salmon per rod – our July fishing gave a very high number of fresh fish with a good number of Big fish up to 22 lbs. Henrik Nilsen Denmark became top rod in the middle of July with a total catch of 75 Salmon during his 6 days fishing and several others ended up close to the same number - Oh yes this Ponoi season was really something.
Next year 2007 we will continue with our upgrading of the Acha camp – the two well know Scandinavian Fishing guides Andreas Andersson and Steffan Jensen will join to team of Acha guide (both of them have graduated from famous Swedish fishing Guide academies) – both with a high reputation for their Scandinavian casting skills and sense for excellent guiding.
Four new huts will be added to the six existing huts – that means that we can now guarantee single accommodation for all Acha rods. All huts will be up graded with new sleeping bags and mattresses – also a new Shower / Sauna house have just been completed in the camp.
Finally we are going to launch two new Ponoi programs in 2007 – Acha autumn program running during the prime weeks of September , plus “the 80 kilometres Acha / Pacha program” in July beginning of August where you have the chance to fish both camps 3 days each camp – both programs will be on the inexpensive side, and represent very high value for the money.
Kola river
Ever heard about river Alta in Norway? – Kola river is almost equivalent to Alta, and what a success - 2006 produced 1640 Salmon to 70 rods – the largest Salmon was a 44 lbs monster – 22 Salmon averaging 32 lbs. and plenty of Salmon in the region of Twenty pounds. Very few places on earth offer a better chance to get into one of those monsters than in Kola River – just listening to Arni Baldursson and what he has to say - “I have fished Kola now for 2 years and before I had never caught a salmon over 30 pounds. During my previous 30 fishing years I had only landed 25 salmon of between 20 and 30 pounds, after fishing Kola river now for three years only I have landed over 70 salmon between 20 and 30 pounds and 4 salmon over 30 pounds plus a 44 lbs. Monster fish
We have managed to buy out the local fishing licence and control the river much more efficiently, and this season we hardly experienced any poaching.
This non Helicopter program is especially interesting for those who value accommodation highly. The programme revolves around a luxurious timber camp with a communal building for eating and socializing. Single accommodation is in comfortable cabins.
Umba river
Umba has for many years been one of the most respected and best well know rivers on Kola. This year 2006 Lax-į obtained exclusive rights during the prime period from the end of August til early October.. Many experienced salmon fishermen who have fished on the Kola peninsular and its plethora of fantastic rivers claim that Umba beats everything in terms of beauty, superb accommodation and, of course, the dramatic autumn fishing in the most breathtaking surroundings
To swing a fly through Umba“s gin clear water on a crisp cold September morning is almost a surreal experience ranking amongst the most exciting moments in Salmon fishing.
Writing these lines we still have two weeks more in front of us in Umba – so far Umba has fished acceptably with some of the great Umba whoppers who have given Umba its reputation – so far we averaged around 70 fish per week, with some Twenty pound plus fish and several fish just under that magic figure.
We will of course monitor Umba over the next coming weeks and keep you up dated on how the river fares.
