Villa Maria fishing report - 105 setrout landed, all new pictures
Villa Maria lodge’s Fishing report :
Week: 19th to 26th february:
This week we have welcomed a group composed of new faces and some returners and also Thomas K. who was here at Villa Maria last week too. 2 from USA, 2 from England, 1 from Belgium and one from Germany. All of them have fished a lot of places throughout the world and are good anglers.

We had another great week at Villa Maria. In terms of numbers it was the best week of the season so far as we hooked 133 fish and landed 105 fish! A lot of fish so, with a run of small fresh silver fish very aggressive and hammering the fly, but also with some great monsters.

Two of our guests, Ken and Bob were wishing to learn how to Spey cast and we gave them courses and taught them the different cast possible (double spey, single spey, roll cast, snake roll,?) depending on the river flow and the wind direction. They learned it very fast even if the conditions were sometimes difficult because of some windy days, but they are now able to use Spey rod back home. They were very happy to learn those casts as they will use them for their main fishing: steelhead, back in Washington state!
Ken, one of our guests learning how to use properly a double handed rod made some miracle, using only his Spey rod even if he is a great caster with single handed rod, and put a lot of motivation to learn and stick to it. His efforts have been granted as he hooked and landed the biggest fish of the week with his Spey rod. This huge 26 pounder sea trout took him a lot of line and gave him a tremendous fight. After quite a while and several runs and jump, the fish started to get tired and the guide could net him. What a fish! What a thrill!!
Beside this huge 26 pounder we also landed some other beauty as Thomas landed a 22 and a 24 pounders.
The flies of the week were the tube flies as we caught a lot of fish with the Green Highlander, Thomas’s favourite flies that he was using quite often and was very successful with, also the Collie Dog in fast water or before dark instead of a leech, Sunray Shadow too and some hand made guide’s tube too.
We fished mostly with floating lines and sink tip depending on the water temperature, fish mood and the pools, but also sometime with heavier lines (S3, S4 shooting head) in deeper pools or when the water temperature was colder as we had couple of mornings with only 7-8°C.
Most of the fish were pretty fresh and at the end of the week we saw a good numbers of very fresh fish running upstream as the high tide and full moon was getting closer. So we should have a very good week upcoming.
The top rod this week was Peter from U.K. with 23 fish landed. What a surprise for him as it was his first time here in Argentina and on the Rio Grande. He will come back for sure and certainly next year as he just loved his experience down here at Villa Maria.
Everything can happen here at Villa Maria on the Rio Grande like for Peter coming here for his first time and being the top rod, or for Ken learning spey casting and catch the biggest fish of the week, a fish of a life time!
After this week most of our clients were wishing to come back again and some will become repeaters!
We will wait for them and welcome them for another great time here at Villa Maria.
