Bella Vista Fishing Report Jan 23-30 - Average weight 11.5lbs!!
Fishing Report: Bella Vista Lodge
Week Of: January 23 to January 29 - 2010
This week it was time to find new fishing spots for next week and the rest of the season!!! All the guides scouted the river for three days. At the beginning of the week, the river conditions were excellent, although you could tell something was brewing in the Andes Mountains because the river rose two inches in a matter of hours and started to change to a darker color. However, in those three days fishing, we caught 13 sea trout, the average weight being 11.15 pounds and the average number of fishes per rod was two per day.
But then in the middle of the week we had heavy rain showers for two days and two nights throughout the Andes and the resulting watershed brought about a very sudden rise of particularly muddy water. Bella Vista Lodge is being affected by the dirty water coming from not only the Turbio River, the main Rio Gallegos’s tributary, but also the Penitentes River and the Rubens River, both of which have their origins in the Andes. All this resulted in a rise of over twenty-five inches!!!
Consequently, after studying both the level and muddy, brown color of the river, we found ourselves obliged to stop fishing for the rest of the week.
The good news, however, is that with high water we should get fresh fish from the sea in no time.
But one of the rare advantages that our lodge has is the possibility of going in search of resident brown trout in the Gallegos Chico River with dry flies, which it is still an incredible experience!! We recommend it to everyone.
River Conditions.. Was in great shape at the beginning of the week, but due to rain and snowfall in the Andes Mountains, the river rose twenty-five inches in only three days. It is still dark for the moment.
Water temperature.. Between 10 ŗC and 13 ŗC, the water was Quite dark because of the big rise in the middle of the week. Water level rose 25 inches the last two day of the week. Much higher water levels than normal for this river.
Fishing Conditions.. The first three days of the week!! We caught a lot of big fish and we ended with an average weight of 11.15 lbs!!!!.
We caught 13 sea trout bigger than 7 pounds, and we also caught plenty of resident browns in the Gallegos Chico River.
Fly lines used.. We used only floating lines (PowerSpey Versitip and Skagit Heads) with type eight tips. The last day we could fish before the flood, type fourteen or super fast sink tips were necessary.
Fishing Techniques..The water was flowing fast enough that simply jigging or stripping the line slowly imparted plenty of action.
Flies Used.. We used a lot of big flies during the day and many different kinds of leech patterns when the sun went down.
Big fish for the week.. 1 of 20 lbs, 3 fish between 15 and 19 lbs, and many smaller fish.
Average weight.. 11.15 lbs. Very nice!!!
Conditions of the fish..All sea trout were females. Most of them were very fresh or fresh.
