Famous river Gaula – Paramount salmon fly fishing in breathtaking Norway!
Lax‐a move straight forward for Norway 2010 –a great destination that gives you high value for the money in the “mother country” of salmon fishing. All real serious salmon fishermen should fish Norway at least once in a good season! Now Lax‐a proudly presents one of the best arrangements ever in Gaula! Names of rivers like Gaula, Namsen, Stjordal and Orkla generally cause the hearts of any serious salmon angler to beat a little faster. These are all classic rivers, especially famous for their extremely high average weight of the fish. And river Gaula is normally the best of them all. The river Gaula has been among the top three rivers in Norway for decades in the catching statistics, and on the very top in more recent years NASF took a blessed action to manage a buy out of the gill nets in the Trondheim fjord some years ago, which secured the runs and breeding of the famous Norwegian salmon in the Trondelag rivers for years to come. This gave a very obvious and promising effect the past years; it has been estimated that the rise of big salmon (weighing more than 7 kgs) increased by 50% last season. More on river Gaula: Gaula flows through the Gauldal valley in Sor‐Trondelag county, Norway. It drains a watershed of 3,658 km2. In the south it starts from the lake Gaulhaen in Holtalen municipality, where it is joined by a tributary, the Sokna river in Storen village, in the county of Sor‐Trondelag, Norway. The river runs into Gaulos fjord at Leinstrand, Trondheim in Sor‐Trondelag county. The river Gaula is approximately 145 km long. The river Gaula is statistically one of the absolute top salmon rivers in Europe, famous not only for the numbers of salmon it produces but also for the high average size (6‐8 kgs = 14 to 18 pounds). Including the tributaries the salmon can be found in 210 Kilometers (131 miles) of the river. This together with the fact that fishermen from all over the world have made pilgrimage to the Gaula for more than a century, has given this river a very special status amongst the most serious of salmon fishermen. Every year Gaula is at the top of the catch statistics from Norway’s salmon rivers, with 30–0 tons of rod caught salmon. For a long time Gaula River has been in the absolute top of among Norway's 629 salmon rivers, second only to the Tana River which is 10 times longer, but still produces only twice as many rod‐caught salmon.
For a long time Gaula River has been in the absolute top of among Norway's 629 salmon rivers, second only to the Tana River which is 10 times longer, but still produces only twice as many rod‐caught salmon. fish averaging approximately 10 kgs (22 lbs). The prime fishing takes place in June and July for fish in the 7 to 15 kg range (15 to 35 lbs), with some stunning 40‐pounders on occasion. Grilse runs arrive in mid‐July, followed by a good run of sea‐trout. But the runs of fish of all sizes are actually quite spread out during the season 1st June –31st August: Depending on water levels and temperatures, one can experience late smaller runs of fish in sizes 7‐15 kgs even in late July/beginning of August. The Lax‐a beat in Gaula –the ideal, classic, salmon fishing trip in 2010! Lax‐a offers an exclusive arrangement in the river Gaula in the season of 2010. After several years of scouting for the best beats and framework for the ideal salmon fishing offer in Norway, we have found a fantastic beat –Sandbrota –just below the big rapid Gaulfossen. Gaulfossen divides River Gaula in a upper and lower part and in early June salmon don´t rise through Gaulfossen due to high and cold water level. Therefore the lower part of Gaula normally keeps the best June beats, especially those located close to Gaulfossen. The Lax‐a beat Sandbrota is available for booking during the whole of June and is suitable for up to 4 rods at the same time. The beat keeps several pools and stop places for big salmon rising. Sandbrota fishes very well in June and for an example the opening week alone produced 50 salmon averaging 20 pounds. Our offer includes weekly fishing and accommodation in a classic Norwegian house just a stones threw from the river and our beat.
The Lodge: Our fishing lodge and base camp situated just a few metres from the river Gaula and Sandbrota beat, is fantastically positioned for a focused hard‐core salmon fishing week. This traditional Norwegian house is newly renovated and suitable for fishing adventures. The house has all necessities you can expect to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The lodge has 5 bedrooms in total and sleeps 8. The lodge presents a living room/lounge with TV and DVD, dining areas, several showers and toilets, drying room for waders and wet gear, etc. Outside there is a nice place where you can spot the river, have a coffee and a rest, tie a fly for the evening event or have your dinner under the bare sky. The lodge and the beat is situated approx 1h 15m by car from the Trondheim Airport. It’s all there for you to use and enjoy!
The fishing in June Fly fishing for salmon I Gaula in June is hard core fishing. This is the best period of the season to catch a big salmon up to 40 lbs or even more. The salmon isn’t that numerous as later in the season but on the other hand the average weight is approx 20 lbs. The water level is normally high and cold depending on how much snow there is still left in the mountains from the winter. You will need heavy fishing equipment ‐ two handed rod for class 10 or higher, fast sinking lines and big flies. It’s also preferable if you are familiar with underhand casting technique. Recommended tippet size is no less than 0,45 mm. Good flies are brass tubes in black/orange, black/green and olive/yellow It’s of course possible to rent suitable fishing equipment and also to buy flies in the lodge. Our guides are also there for you if you like some advice or some training in casting technique.
