Tungufljot is on of the best self catering river in Iceland , in 2008 there where 2400 salmon landed and in 2009 there where 1200 salmon landed - this catch for 6 rods.
The winner Tungufljot - our newest salmon river. 2400 salmon landed in 2008.
Season 2008 has been imazing with 2.400 salmon caught. 4 rods where fishing below the falls and another 4 rods above the falls after 1st of August. Picture of Peter Ariowitsch fishing the Lower Canyons.
Plans for 2009 - Number of rods for 2009:
June 24th to July 10th - 4 rods
July 10th to August 1st - 6 rods
August 1st to October 20th - 8 rods

3.800 salmon took the fish ladder at the Faxi falls and are now spowning up in the upper reaches of Tungufljot and its tributaries. ** some fish went in the counter / ladder again so this figures are not exact as som where counted two times , more likely to be 2000 salmon which have been to the middle / upper Tungufljot.
The season is from 24th June until 20th of October.
During some days the run was so great at the fish ladder that we could pick the salmon up by hands! In high water the salmon jumped over the trap so we in fact do not know exactly how many fish went up river except the ones we counted , could have been much more during the high water.
We had some great Brown trout fishing on the Upper Tungufljot.
We look forward for next season 2009, we do hope for another great season.

Tungufljot river is located 100 km South East of Reykjavķk. The river is in size slightly bigger than East and West Rangį and is rated as a large river on Icelandic standard. It is gin clear water and offer endless pools for fly fishing.
Very interesting the salmon run of Tungufljot, this season we had fresh fish running from tbeginning of July until 20th of October which is fantastic and unique for Iceland to have such a long season.

As for accommodation , you have the choice of staying in a comfortable self catering summer house as on the picture , or at one of the nearest full service Hotels in the area.
The lodges is just a few meters from the river bank.
There are four comfortable summerhouses, each for two rods. The summerhouses are close to the waterfall Faxi in a beautiful suroundings.
There are beds for 4 people in two rooms. In a comfortable livingroom is a TV and a radio. On veranda is a Jacuzzi and a gas barbeque.

Many people prefer the self catering lodges over full service , here you have it exactly like you want , no timings for meals. Best is to book 2 full rods , as in that case you have one lodge privately for you and your friends.
To drive to Tungufljót lodge drive Main road number 1 almost to Selfoss, right before Selfoss you turn left into road number 35 and follow that road to Reykholt. Drive through Reykholt and 8 kilometers more. On your right hand side you see a sign Knošrabśšir and Sveitasetriš. Turn there and you will come to a dirt road, then go left, pass one small road to your left and then turn left. On your left hand side are two green summerhouses and the first one is number 2 and the other is number 3. Check the Lax-į office for which one you are suppose to stay in.

Standing below of one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland hoping that the pool is full of fish waiting to get up the fishladder. But would they take my fly ?
Skuli my guide, who is, to my mind, the best expert on salmonfishing on earth ( together with Arni ) noticed a few fish "head and tailing" " Robert, I better get the net ! " Skuli said " Why get the net ? I have not hooked a fish yet " I replied, while working the fly through the pool.
I had hardly finished my very pessimistic words when a fish took my fly very argressive. Woooouuh, what a bang !! It was quiet a job to get the fish out of the strong cristal clear current below the falls. I finally managed the fish into Skuli's net.
In order to built up the salmon stock on the Tungufljot Skuli took the healthy hen fish to the breeding box in the fishladder. Was this pure luck ? No, it was not ! Within a few of hours I had 7 freshrun salmon taking the fly very hard and even Skuli, only fishing my rod for a couple of minutes, had two salmon. It is very rare that my armes ache from playing fish, but this day they did. By the way........ wonderful pains !!!
I am very convinced that the Tungufljut will be the star performer of future years. The fishing was exceptional and the beautiful scenery made the fishing a day in a lifetime. I am looking forward to fishing it next year again. Hi Arni, All the best Robert

The Tungufljot rivers system is one of the biggest in Iceland , it is the main river which is about 30 km long , three attractive tributarys which joins the main river on the upper part plus several ather lesser important tributarys and sight streams.

Tungufljot is a long river , from the estuary were Tungufjot joins the large clacier river Hvitį up to the waterfall Faxi is about 10 km, from Faxi up to the top waterfall (no salmon can enter) is about 20 km, in total the river is 30km long.
Tungufljot has very clear water and steady water level, will not matter if it rains or not the waterlevel on Tungufljot is very steady because it come mainly from spring sources.
The beauty of the river, Tungufljot is extremely scenic river, have everything to offer to fly fishermans, long slow moving flats, waterfalls, fast streams , many islands and the Flora is magnificient on the river side.
Tungufljot is only an hour away from the Capital of Iceland Reykjavķk, it means the anglers can go direct from the International Airport to the river , and back to the airport direct from the river. There is no hotel cost in Reykjavķk involved either domestic airfaires.
