The action time is up in Rio Grande - Fresh news from Villa Maria from the first week
The Argentinian Seatrout season has started, first anglers just finished their week with great fishing, 70 fish to land, all bright and in strong health, this is much better fishing then same week last year. Our friend Alejandro Bianchetti, a veteran guide from Villa Maria sent me this update from the week. Those of you who have already booked a week, get ready, it´s action time..Those of you who still haven´t booked in yet, this is the go for you guys.
Week of: December 25 to December 31 2009
This week we had 9 guest in the lodge. Seven argentinians and an american couple, Phil and Lyn, who were fishing the Rio Grande for first time. Finally the sea trouts are arriving in good number, we caught 70 fish this week, much better fishing than same week last season!
I was guiding Carlos and Hernan one morning in Pedrero and altough we have seen some fish moving in the pool, the were not interested in our flies. Carlos was using a single hand rod 9 foot 7 weight Sage RPL with a fast 4 sinking shooting head.
As have tried many different flies without succes, I suggested him to try the Green Machine and bingo! In the second cast he hooked the largest fish of the week, a beautiful silver chromer hen that we landed after 15 minutes of hard work!
River Conditions: The river is dropping a lot and the water very clear. Temperature of the water is perfect, about 13 degree.
Fishing Techniques: As the water warmed up, we started to use smaller flies and lighter lines. In fact the two biggest fish were caught with green machines fished with sinking lines and long leaders.
Flies used: At the beginning of the week, with the water still cold, we fished mostluy with leeches, also during the day. But later in the week with warmer water, green machines, small rubber legs and collie dogs were the succesful ones.
Fish: 70 fish caught in 8 days. We caught 4 fish over 15 lbs and 2 fish over 20 lbs.
Big fish for the week: 23 pounder caught by Carlos Cortez in Pedrero Pool.
Conditions of the fish: All the fish were in amazing shape. All silver chromers.
