Some years back I bought from Christer Sjoberg at LOOP some of their first LOOP Classic 10/13 reel they made , for 15 foot rod line 10. This reel I have been using ever since for big salmon rivers mainly in Russia and Norway. After a good few years this reel is still going strong and travelling with me where ever I go for big Salmon , this reel have recorded 160 salmon over 20 pounds , 18 salmon over 30 pounds and 4 salmon over 40 pounds. Amazingly I never had problem giving the reel a hard time fighting all this strong fish and I am not a delicate man when it comes to tackle , all I have done is renewing the brakes one time and it is like new. April coming up , that is the hot fishing time for the Sails and Marlin in Guatemala, April , May and June that is the time you want to be there. Lower Yokanga, Varzina, Sidorovka and Drozdovka are rivers in the military zone in Russia. People travelling there need to have a military zone pass to be able to fish the rivers.

People travelling to those rivers have to apply for the military zone pass at least 2 months before arriving to Russia in order to get the pass. I have emailed everyone going there and would like to remind those who have not emailed me back with paperwork for that to do so as soon as possible. Thank you.

It was a complicated week in regard to climate. The river dropped a lot and after that our clients could not fish during windstorm for one day, and we had three days with high temperatures and wind blowing upstream, and we only had success with sea trout during the last hours of during the afternoon. Only three days of the week were ideal for the Rio Gallegos. The clear required excellent casting with floating lines and long leaders..Axelo axelo@lax-a.is

This week we have welcomed a group composed of new faces and some returners from “Go Fishing Worldwide”, with his group leader David G. 6 of them were from UK, and 1 from Germany. All of them have fished a lot of places throughout the world and are good anglers. in terms of numbers the biggest fish was 25lbs, total score was 97 fish landed, 28 fish to land on the best day, amazing..Axelo axelo@lax-a.is

West Ranga is the most productive river in Iceland, with 500 salmon caught per rod last season. A phenomenal success which is hard to find elsewhere! The 2008 season even gave more; 700 salmon per rod and we have no reason to expect less in 2010. elfa@lax-a.is

This is a remarkeble river and holds one of Iceland´s strongest and fittest, sea-run brown trout stock there is, as well as some sea-run char and occasioanally salmon. Rotation will be as usual , 1 day on each beat except when you fish Junction and Pump , you will fish half a day on Junction and half a day on Pump .. same starting on Pump in the morning you will fish Junction in the afternoon , exactly  the same arrangements as before...

Landowners released over 40.000 smolts on the middle part of the Upper West Ranga in spring 2009. The area is ideal for fly fishing , and there is good access by car. Landscape and river is is pictures up there. I belive fishing will be reasonable good up there mid / late summer ,  giving the salmon good time to run up to this beat I would say right timing to be there would be from 1st August until the end of the season. We have built a self catering lodge wich can take 4 rods in 2 double rooms. Price pr. rod is Eur: 1.800.- a week incl. We had another great week at Villa Maria. In terms of numbers it was the best week of the season so far as we hooked 133 fish and landed 105 fish! A lot of fish so, with a run of small fresh silver fish very aggressive and hammering the fly, but also with some great monsters. Two of our guests, Ken and Bob were wishing to learn how to Spey cast and we gave them courses and taught them the different cast possible (double spey, single spey, roll cast, snake roll,…) depending on the river flow and the wind direction. They learned it very fast even if the conditions were sometimes difficult because of some windy days, but they are now able to use Spey rod back home.. Axelo axelo@lax-a.is

Having landed houndreds of salmon in the 3 - 15 pound class , there must be a moment that you look for the oppertunite of catching a very big salmon. ? That normally means June and there is not many salmon rivers in the world that offer 30 - 40 pounders ... and also it means very hard work for a very few fish... BUT only trophie salmon ... you have to fish early ... deep and slow .. and in June , cold... it is for the real salmon anglers . It have been on my list for long time to test fish the Western Litza river on the Kola Peninsula , well I have decided to do it this year , for 2 weeks , 26th June to 3rd July and 3rd July to 10th July. I fished Western Litza for only one day some years back and i liked the river very much , it is a famous big fish river , i saw and I landed some big fish. I belive this is the 2 best weeks of the season , we will have the river privately for our selfs ( that is the lower river - best beats ) , I would think 6 - 8 rods would be ideal for each week , there will be driving distance involved as there no camp on the Western Litza. East Ranga is best known for two reasons,

1. High annual catches and,

2. A good number of mws, especially in July.

East Ranga and West Ranga share many similarities, both are highly productive rivers (they’e taken turns on being the numer 1 and number 2 rivers in Iceland for the past several years) both are double hand rod rivers with beautiful scenery.

Another week of fishing has just ended at Bella Vista Lodge. This time we had the pleasure of welcoming to our lodge, Hugh “T” and Luke “G B”, who came from the UK, Fred from the U.S., and Vadim and Marina, from Russia. At the beginning of the week the level of the water was still a bit higher, but on Monday the river was on nice condition regarding level and clearance.. Axelo axelo@lax-a.is

This week we have welcomed another group of familiar faces, 3 from Iceland, and 2 from Germany. They all have fished the Rio Grande before. They are all good fisherman having fished all over the world! I just returned from one of my very favorite hot spots for the BIG Sea Trout. I fished beautiful Bella Vista Lodge on Rio Gallegos in Santa Cruz Argentina February 12-17, 2010. Bella Vista also offers some of the finest dry fly Brown Trout fishing on the adjacent Gallegos Chico Spring Creek.

With an experienced group from Austria and Germany, we had a good start the the week and landed 13 fish. By Sunday the river rose sharply and it was soon unfishable. We left the main river and spent a day and a half fishing the beautiful Lago Fagnano, where we caught a good number of brown, lake and brook trout. With far from ideal condition on the last day we returned to the Rio Grande and to our surprise found the river full of taking fish! Amongst them included a beautiful 26 pounder, a new season record! If conditions continue to improve we are set for a superb week to come..Axelo axelo@lax-a.is

We had a great start to the week, with high but clear water. Between 4 clients we caught 20 fish with more than half weighing in at more than 10 lbs. These where almost all very fresh fish and the highlight was a beautiful 23 pounder. Towards the end of the week heavy rain in the Andes let to a sharp rise in the main river making it unfishable. Our guests moved their focus to the Gallegos Chico and caught a good number of resident browns..Axelo axelo@lax-a.is

The beginning of the week, Feb 6th to the 12th, was difficult due to particularly high water levels. However, as the water began to drop and clear we came into some good fishing. We ended the week with 42 fish at an average weight of 8.5 pounds. The fishing should continue to improve as the river continues to drop and clear..Axelo axelo@lax-a.is

Here is the latest fishing report from Bella Vista, Jan 29th to Feb 4th. Another great week of fishing has now ended. This time we had the pleasure of welcoming to our lodge Ives and B. Bunny, who came from the Switzerland, and were all new customers. Here are the latest fishing news from Villa Maria, week of 29th Jan to Feb 4th. Very high water at the beginning of the week made for a tricky start. On the plus side guests had a great day fishing the beautiful Lago Escondido, the highlight of which was a lovley 4 lb brook trout. Towards the end of the week the fishing picked up as water levels fell back down. The largest fish of the week was a superb 24 pounder..Axelo axelo@lax-a.is

67 fish, all silver and fresh, were landed this week in Kau-Tapen, with an average weight of 9.5 pounds. We had 10 fish over 15 pounds, and 3 over 20 pounds. After the rains stopped the river started to get in a better shape. More clarity, better temperature and level, resulting in a better drift on many of the pools, and also allowing us to wade across..Axelo axelo@lax-a.is

Greenland Reindeer are known to be larger than those found in most of the other Arctic and sub-Arctic regions, both in the weight and size of their antlers. This week it was time to find new fishing spots for next week and the rest of the season!!! All the guides scouted the river for three days. At the beginning of the week, the river conditions were excellent, although you could tell something was brewing in the Andes Mountains because the river rose two inches in a matter of hours and started to change to a darker color. However, in those three days fishing, we caught 13 sea trout, the average weight being 11.15 pounds and the average number of fishes per rod was two per day.. Axelo axelo@lax-a.is

Latest news from Villa Maria "This week we have welcomed a full group of repeaters from Switzerland. Another group from Roger Tour Fishing Agency. They have been coming to Villa Maria for the last 2, 3 or 4 years. They all know each other, the atmosphere at the lodge was great and we had a lot of fun during the week. The week started with a bit of coloured water while we did the warm up session and the first day of fishing, but then the water cleared up pretty well and the fishing was very good"..Axelo axelo@lax-a.is

Back in Iceland from Africa , we had a great hunting and sight seeing trip to different and some new very interesting places , it was a very good trip , all about that soon and with a lot´s of pictures. We made some great future plans in Africa on this trip and one of the trip is a African Safari in our own plane King Air , trip for 8 people ideal for 4 hunters and 4 non hunters , starting in South Africa for 4 days , then flying up to Namibia for 4 days , from Namibia to Zimbabwe for 4 days , from Zimbabwe to Zambia for 4 days and then back to South Africa and flying home from Johannesburg. Our three spring weeks are getting well booked in the Kola river for 2010.
Kola is a well known river by many anglers, for those who have not heard about or experienced it yet, it is almost equivalent to Alta in Norway in number and sizes of fish. For those who have experienced the Kola river know there are no words for describing the size and strength of the fish..

Lower Yokanga, Varzina and Sidorovka are all situated in the military zone in Russia. Those who fish these rivers need a special license to get into the military zone and that license cannot be issued with less then 2 months notice before the trip.

If you are interested in fishing on the military zone in any of those rivers please be informed, you need to book in good advance. There are no last minute booking possibilites because of the military zone paperwork...

The Northeast coast of Russia's Kola Peninsula is a very unique location. The cold waters of the Arctic Sea meet the rocky coastal highlands to offer one of the finest treasures of the famed Kola Peninsula, the last refuge of the large Atlantic Salmon.  The river water is as clear as the wind of the tundra and the Salmon are big and plentiful. In the midst of this rugged beauty sits the finest Salmon fishing camp in all of Russia, the Varzina River Lodge. A few years ago I sat pondering at my tying bench thinking how good green is on Canada's famed Bonaventure River. I took every green feather and floss in my bench and tied a fly so garish that I ended up calling it Seasick. The following September after fishing one of my  favorite Bonaventure pools all day without a single swirl. jump or strike,  I remembered my little fly Seasick, As I went to tie it on, my guide mumbled something about it will never work...too much green. Undeterred, I had a special feeling and i was determined to give it my best shot.  It was the last pass of the day and there was nothing to loose. We have now received the fishing report from West Ranga for the summer of 2009. The total catch was 10.407 salmon, making last summer the second best summer ever in West Ranga

I am missing the Kola river , the river where I have landed all my biggest salmon in my life , almost all my clients as well have taken their biggest salmon ever on the Kola river. There is no river in the world with such a great number of 20 to over 40 pound salmon. We will be opperating only the best weeks in June for the big Kola Monster salmon , the weeks are 5 - 12th June , 12 - 19th June and 19 - 26th June. Same beats as usual Bear beat , Reindeer , Home , Junction , Pump , La Parska , Monica and Net, we will reduce the rods to be only 12 and reduce prices. There is a different  accommodation from the previous years.  Well I think this is a very interesting news to the salmon anglers world , half of the rods is already taken. We are very happy to have secured the lease on the Sandbrota beat on the Lower Gaula , this is one of the top beats on the Gaula early season , June early July , 50 large spring salmon where landed in one week ( the opening week in 2009 ) , we will only fish 4 rods.
