We celebrated our 15th year of managing Bella Vista in style. Great river conditions throughout the season, with only a couple of difficult weeks, helped contribute to a memorable season. We caught 30 % more fish per rod than last season and every week compared favourably to the previous year. The average weight was a remarkable 12.5 pounds, the highest in the history of the lodge! Conditions: We are looking forward to the opening in Gaula and we have great expectations for the fishing this season. Reports from Scotland and some rivers at the Swedish West coast and Denmark that has already opened, tells that the opening has been very good. Many big Salmon is caught in Denmark and normally Norway will follow so things are so far looking good. There is currently normal level of snow in the mountain and the weather is still quite cold. Hopefully there will be some snow left to the opening so we will have good water conditions. Water level around 300 cubicmeters in water flow would be perfect. We have a week available on the river DEE 3 - 8th of May, it is middle DEE the Birse beat ,  this week should be one of the best of the season , so far April have already produced 16 salmon on Birse ,  in 2009 there where 244 salmon landed from Birse.  Arni arnibald@lax-a.is

Latest news in Iceland from Tourist Board of Iceland & Trade Council of Iceland –Update 23 April at 16.00. Although the eruption in Eyjafjallajokull continues, there have not been any reports of ash fall today. Some ash mist has been detected to the west of the volcano. The Icelandic Met Office expects south-easterly winds today, and that the wind force will gradually increase. I am expecting a good season in Tungufljot for 2010 , conditions in the river is good , there have been lots of smolts going out for the last several years and the fishing have been good. We will open Tungufljot on the 1st of July and with no doubt the big two winter salmon will be there waiting for us. Many things happened on my last trip in Argentina in March...! Most of it was very funny.

I was very tired on a night bus driving from La Pampa Santa Rosa to Neuquen.
I arrived in Neuquen early morning at the bus station, I asked the bus driver if this was the right stop. He answered (in Spanish) "no, no the second one is the right one, here rest for 10 minutes only".   So I happily rushed to the toilet at the bus station. After sitting there for only a minute or so I hear sound "brum brum.."   I realized that my bus was going away!  And all my things were in the bus. I had nothing... nothing!!! ... I pulled my trousers up and ran as fast as I could in time to see the bus driving away! I got terrified... I ran and ran and just reached the bus and hammered the door and screamed "LET ME IN, LET ME IN!!"  The driver looked at me ... and he yelled back very scared "no no no" then he took of and disapared around the courner ... gone !
I stood there helpless with nothing ... all my bags, passport and money in the bus ... I had been robt! ... I turned around distressed, noticing many people standing and looking at me.  Hummmm I recognize them all and saw this was all the people from the bus. I walk to them and try to talk to them in Spanish.  They walk away and do not want to talk to me.  Looking at me in a funny way and saying logo logo ... humm .. I decide to walk around the courner.  To my relief and shame I see the bus and the driver!  Ooopss, the driver just went around the corner to clean the window!

I had anticipated fishing the world renown Ponoi River on Russia's incredible Kola Peninsula for more years then I can even remeber. Then in
2008 I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to this remote tundra wonderland and fish the last week in June at Brevyeni, arguably the very best camp in all of Russia. WOW is the only word I know that can capture that magic! 

No doubts that the 4 rods at Blanda beat 1 is far the best June fishing for Salmon in Iceland , daily catch is normally at 20 salmon a day shared by 4 rods , and we are talking of big two winter salmon. The openings we have for next June is 2 rods 8 - 14th June and 2 rods 19 - 22nd June ,   talk to Arni at arnibald@lax-a.is for all further information.

Last week was excellant on the river DEE www.fishdee.co.uk reported 164 salmon landed ,  biggest  32 , 25, 24 , 24 and 22 pounders , there are some big fish around. Lower Crathes West Durris landed 20 salmon last week, Arni arnibald@lax-a.is

The Icelandic Tourist Board held a meeting at noon today, 16 April 2010, whereupon it was decided to issue a press release stressing that day-to-day life in Iceland is just as usual, even though the volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull glacier on the south coast of Iceland has made a profound impact and generated dangers in a specified area. As most of you know a new eruption started in Eyjafjallajokull 2 days ago. Eruption started with a huge flood. All went well and only roads got damaged, no houses nor bridges.  Since then there have been a few floods every day, but smaller ones that have not made any damage. The eruption is some 50km away from our Ranga rivers , the flood did not have any effect on the rivers and luckily there is a long distance between the rivers and the Volcano.  There has been a lot of ash coming from the volcano and unfortunately the wind direction has been taking the ash to Europe causing problems in air traffic all over Europe. Normally ash eruption only lasts up to a week/10days with a traditional lava eruption after that. A clean lava eruption will not harm our rivers at all , even if it will be active for a long time. Should be interesting for our salmon anglers next summer to take a 50 km car ride to look at the eruption in Eyjafjallajokull if still active.  We will keep you updated and we are so sorry that nature in Iceland is causing all these problems in Europe , Arni arnibald@lax-a.is

Fishing getting better on the DEE in Scotland , yesterday 34 salmon reported from the DEE , 4 from Lower Crathes / West Durris , the biggest one of 25 pound came from U Drum & L Durris. Salmon fishing is a expensive sport , specially if you are fishing the better rivers at prime time. Fishing hours are long or from 07:00 in the morning until 22:00 hours in the evening with a lunch brake , this is a long fishing day and most of the time fishing is good with some few salmon landed every day , sometimes big numbers. Many anglers do not realize that in Iceland it is possible ( actually very popular ) to save 50% of the daily / weekly price and share a rod with a friend , that is to say .. you fish only 1 rod at a time on the river , but 2 anglers fish this rod during the whole day / week in a rotation , still plenty of fishing for both and gives some welcoming coffie brakes and good chat with your guide in betweene. Very promising weather on the Kola peninsula these days , 4 - 8 on celcius during the day  , that is just excellant , last year it was freesing cold at the same time. We are starting to count the days until we start ... It may not have the stamina of salmon or sea trout, but when it comes brutal takes and the initial savage runs, nothing beats the tiger fish. When you then add that the fishing takes place in some of the most remote and pristine places in Africa often with Elephants and Hipoes around you, you will understand that this is anexperience not to be missed.

Indigenous to Southern and Central Africa the Tiger fish is the prime African fresh water sport fish.

Lax-a organises tiger fishing trips to various venues in Southern Africa, e.g. the giant Caborra Bassa Dam in Mocambique where the fishing is taking place in many little sheltered bays and river inlets and on the Zambezi river in the area upstream of Victoria Falls. Leaving tomorrow  back home to Iceland and the plan was to relax here in Buenos Aries to day ... but no not going to happen just got a call and now leaving to hunt the sought after Axis deer now in the afternoon and early tomorrow morning , then straight to airport for the flight. I am going to Estancia Punta Caballos 2 hours drive from Buenos Aries , I am told it is a great place for the Axis , well I will find out. It is just great if this works well out, that means hunters can end their trip here in Buenos Aries Province by taking the Axis deer. Arni arnibald@lax-a-.is

Here are the latest fishing reports from Argentina, the fishing seems to be brilliant this week, here is all the latest.." We had another good week at Villa Maria altough the fishing was tough. Anglers and guides worked very hard to find the fish due to the difficult conditions. In terms of numbers we hooked 73 fish and landed 46 fish! But despite the difficult conditions, we managed to catch three 24 pounders, one 26 and one 26,5 pounders!! Axelo axelo@lax-a.is

Just getting better here every year, millions of doves flying. We are all having a great time shooting 500 to 2000 birds a day pr. gun... Or more if you wish and you have energy ! We had another great week at Villa Maria. In terms of numbers it was the second best week of the season so far as we hooked 122 fish and landed 98 fish! A lot of fish so, and the size of the fish also improved this week witn and average weight of 9 pounds. The biggest fish was caught by Jim, in the upper sections of our water, it was the last day of the week, late in the day, the last pool we were fishing and in the first cast there…bingo!! huge fresh silver bullet took his leech and after a long and exiting fight we finally landed this beautifull 25 pounder..Axelo axelo@lax-a.is

This time we had the pleasure of welcoming to our lodge for four days a really nice group of guys who came from the United States and were all new customers. This week, like the previous week, was a complicated week with regards to the climate. The river dropped another 5 inches and after that our six clients could not fish during a windstorm that lasted for half of the day. Anyway, the weather was less than accommodating this past week. Sometimes it was blowing as hard as 57.7 miles an hour..Axelo axelo@lax-a.is

Some years back I bought from Christer Sjoberg at LOOP some of their first LOOP Classic 10/13 reel they made , for 15 foot rod line 10. This reel I have been using ever since for big salmon rivers mainly in Russia and Norway. After a good few years this reel is still going strong and travelling with me where ever I go for big Salmon , this reel have recorded 160 salmon over 20 pounds , 18 salmon over 30 pounds and 4 salmon over 40 pounds. Amazingly I never had problem giving the reel a hard time fighting all this strong fish and I am not a delicate man when it comes to tackle , all I have done is renewing the brakes one time and it is like new. April coming up , that is the hot fishing time for the Sails and Marlin in Guatemala, April , May and June that is the time you want to be there. Lower Yokanga, Varzina, Sidorovka and Drozdovka are rivers in the military zone in Russia. People travelling there need to have a military zone pass to be able to fish the rivers.

People travelling to those rivers have to apply for the military zone pass at least 2 months before arriving to Russia in order to get the pass. I have emailed everyone going there and would like to remind those who have not emailed me back with paperwork for that to do so as soon as possible. Thank you.

It was a complicated week in regard to climate. The river dropped a lot and after that our clients could not fish during windstorm for one day, and we had three days with high temperatures and wind blowing upstream, and we only had success with sea trout during the last hours of during the afternoon. Only three days of the week were ideal for the Rio Gallegos. The clear required excellent casting with floating lines and long leaders..Axelo axelo@lax-a.is

This week we have welcomed a group composed of new faces and some returners from “Go Fishing Worldwide”, with his group leader David G. 6 of them were from UK, and 1 from Germany. All of them have fished a lot of places throughout the world and are good anglers. in terms of numbers the biggest fish was 25lbs, total score was 97 fish landed, 28 fish to land on the best day, amazing..Axelo axelo@lax-a.is

West Ranga is the most productive river in Iceland, with 500 salmon caught per rod last season. A phenomenal success which is hard to find elsewhere! The 2008 season even gave more; 700 salmon per rod and we have no reason to expect less in 2010. elfa@lax-a.is

Team lax-á is proud to present the legendary trout river Litlaá, located only 45 min drive from Husavik city. This is a remarkeble river and holds one of Iceland´s strongest and fittest, sea-run brown trout stock there is, as well as some sea-run char and occasioanally salmon. There are bigger trout in the river now then ever before bacause during past seasons the fishing methood of catch and realease has become more and more popular amongst anglers fishing the river. These monstress trouts, they seem to come a live every day during the season and grab a fly, only to shake their heads and chop the leader like a strip of thread. Rotation will be as usual , 1 day on each beat except when you fish Junction and Pump , you will fish half a day on Junction and half a day on Pump .. same starting on Pump in the morning you will fish Junction in the afternoon , exactly  the same arrangements as before...

Landowners released over 40.000 smolts on the middle part of the Upper West Ranga in spring 2009. The area is ideal for fly fishing , and there is good access by car. Landscape and river is is pictures up there. I belive fishing will be reasonable good up there mid / late summer ,  giving the salmon good time to run up to this beat I would say right timing to be there would be from 1st August until the end of the season. We have built a self catering lodge wich can take 4 rods in 2 double rooms. Price pr. rod is Eur: 1.800.- a week incl. We had another great week at Villa Maria. In terms of numbers it was the best week of the season so far as we hooked 133 fish and landed 105 fish! A lot of fish so, with a run of small fresh silver fish very aggressive and hammering the fly, but also with some great monsters. Two of our guests, Ken and Bob were wishing to learn how to Spey cast and we gave them courses and taught them the different cast possible (double spey, single spey, roll cast, snake roll,…) depending on the river flow and the wind direction. They learned it very fast even if the conditions were sometimes difficult because of some windy days, but they are now able to use Spey rod back home.. Axelo axelo@lax-a.is

It is always exciting when a river opens again after a long winter break. The first opening day in West Ranga is 24 June; during the two first weeks the fishing comes without the full service lodge but includes nice self catering cottages instead. What a fantastic idea of a wading Jacket that Christer Sjöberg from LOOP created last year. This jacket as showned on the pictures is the most comfortable one I have ever tested , and more than that .. you can go out for dinner , night club or where ever , it looks like that you are wearing Armani jacket. Easy packing , all you need is just one jacket for all happenings! I hope Christer keep this one on the market for many years to come .. great ideas and designes never get out of fashion. Having landed houndreds of salmon in the 3 - 15 pound class , there must be a moment that you look for the oppertunite of catching a very big salmon. ? That normally means June and there is not many salmon rivers in the world that offer 30 - 40 pounders ... and also it means very hard work for a very few fish... BUT only trophie salmon ... you have to fish early ... deep and slow .. and in June , cold... it is for the real salmon anglers . Well we at Lax-a have few of those rivers , like Yokanga , Kola , Western Litza, Varzina , Sidorovka , and in Norway Gaula and Orkla. Arni  arnibald@lax-a.is

It have been on my list for long time to test fish the Western Litza river on the Kola Peninsula , well I have decided to do it this year , for 2 weeks , 26th June to 3rd July and 3rd July to 10th July. I fished Western Litza for only one day some years back and i liked the river very much , it is a famous big fish river , i saw and I landed some big fish. I belive this is the 2 best weeks of the season , we will have the river privately for our selfs ( that is the lower river - best beats ) , I would think 6 - 8 rods would be ideal for each week , there will be driving distance involved as there no camp on the Western Litza. East Ranga is best known for two reasons,

1. High annual catches and,

2. A good number of mws, especially in July.

East Ranga and West Ranga share many similarities, both are highly productive rivers (they’e taken turns on being the numer 1 and number 2 rivers in Iceland for the past several years) both are double hand rod rivers with beautiful scenery.

Another week of fishing has just ended at Bella Vista Lodge. This time we had the pleasure of welcoming to our lodge, Hugh “T” and Luke “G B”, who came from the UK, Fred from the U.S., and Vadim and Marina, from Russia. At the beginning of the week the level of the water was still a bit higher, but on Monday the river was on nice condition regarding level and clearance.. Axelo axelo@lax-a.is

This week we have welcomed another group of familiar faces, 3 from Iceland, and 2 from Germany. They all have fished the Rio Grande before. They are all good fisherman having fished all over the world! I just returned from one of my very favorite hot spots for the BIG Sea Trout. I fished beautiful Bella Vista Lodge on Rio Gallegos in Santa Cruz Argentina February 12-17, 2010. Bella Vista also offers some of the finest dry fly Brown Trout fishing on the adjacent Gallegos Chico Spring Creek.
