Bella Vista fishing report - 5 fish between 15-17lbs!!

Fishing Report: Bella Vista Lodge - Week of  February 27th  to March 5th – 2010

Last week we had the pleasure of reserving three days for Victor, John and Jonathan who came from England while the last two days of the week were reserved for our great friend and customer for years Hiroo Saito, who came all the way from Japan, and who fished only the last 2 days of the week.

It was a complicated week in regard to climate. The river dropped a lot and after thatour clients could not fish during windstorm for one day, and we had three days with high temperatures and wind blowing upstream, and we only had success with sea trout during the last hours of during the afternoon.  Only three days of the week were ideal for the Rio Gallegos. The clear required excellent casting with floating lines and long leaders.

During those three days that were good for fishingwe landed 10 fish and lost 4 fish.  The biggest fish of the week was 17  lbs, and we had 5 fish over 15 lbs. Most of them were fresh and provided us with incredible fights and many jumps. The average for the week was 13,5 lbs!! Incredible!!

River Conditions: During the week the water turned very clear and was very low with hot water.  Conditions not ideal for fishing in the main river, but were excellent for the Gallegos Chico, where we caught brown trout on dry flies

Water temperature: between 15 ºC  and  19 ºC.

Water clarity: Water very clear even with strong winds

Water level: It dropped 6 inches during the week.

Fishing Conditions:  Fishing was hard work all week.We finished with an average of 13,5 lbs.  Some days the water was too hot, especially during the mornings and throughout the afternoon.  Only during the evening would the temperature drop a few degrees.

Fly lines used:We used AFS  and Windcutter lines with floating tip and intermediate tips and long leaders.

Fishing Techniques:Casting long enough to present the fly into the channel, mending the line once or twice, andflies moving in small, short moments, especially when the line was in the hot spot

Flies Used: Regarding flies,  rubber-legged flies during the dayand when the water was really clear, smaller nymphs usually.

Big fish for the week:   1 of  17  lbs , 5 fish between  15 and  17  lbs, and many smaller fish . Average weight: 13,5  lbs. Really  Nice !!!

Conditions of the fish:  All sea trout except one were females. Most of them were fresh, while several were turning. Tight lines!!
