Fnjóská
Fnjóská
Big river - big fish
One well known local angler who fished the Fnjóská for the first time this summer commented: "Beautiful river, especially for fly fishing, and full of fish!" Fnjóská is located on the north coast about 450 km from Reykjavík. A rather large river with beautiful, wide, gin clear pools. Typical river of the north coast. The salmon from Fnjóská are also relatively large with good numbers of 10 pounders and bigger. The total annual catch is approximately 300 salmon, although the totals tends to vary according to the elements.
The season of 2004 turned out to be outstanding and the river flew well over 400 salmon, with salmon ranging to 22 pounds. Local anglers who also fish this river and have in company with the river owners hatched a smolt releasing program to enhanch the wild stocks. Similar programs have boosted other rivers and will boost the Fnjóská as well. That means, that the average of 300 will most certainly turn higher in the coming years as the program is designed to level out the downward spirals that usually follow cold years. The river also is one of Icelands very best sea char rivers.
Fnjóská has 6 rods on the whole river. There are two small, self catering lodges which accommodate 3 rods each, making this an ideal choice for small parties looking for privacy and exclusive waters. Each party of 3 rods has one vehicle and one guide with a second vehicle.
Fnjóská is not only a fly fishing delight, but is very attractively priced.
