Fishing
Useful information for anglers going to Argentina
Plan to bring all flies and other fishing gear. Well-stocked tackle shops can be found both in Buenos Aries and Rio Grande. Great collection of nymphs and streamers are tied locally and can be purchased at the lodges.
How to catch and release:
Guides are equipped with large nets featuring in-built scales. They are trained to land your fish, weigh it and measure it, and release it undamaged. If you are landing your own fish, hold it facing the current, and avoid moving it back and forth in the water. You may have to hold it in this position for a good while. Be patient, only when a fish is thoroughly rested should it be allowed to swim away.
Wading in Argentine rivers.
Stocking foot waders with felt-soled wading shoes are best for wading Argentine rivers. It is comfortable to wade "wet" with shorts or lightweight trousers and wading shoes in mid-summer when water temperatures reach the upper 60's and air temperatures are in the 80's and 90's. A wading staff is very helpful in many places. The heavy duty collapsible Falstaff is good for travel. Most fishing is done by wading no deeper than thigh depth.
